Human rights has long symbolized the hope of liberation from the oppression of power-hungry tyrants. Its modern revival came in 1948, with the birth of international human rights and the universal recognition of every person’s inherent right to live freely and express themselves. Since then, it has remained the most viable response to authoritarianism and systemic injustice.
This vision was shaped by complex intellectual developments and the liberating philosophies of modern thinkers. Yet today, international human rights faces serious challenges—particularly from regimes that hide behind cultural relativism or anti-hegemonic rhetoric to justify oppression.
In confronting these threats, human rights must be seen both as a practical alternative to despotism and as a shared cultural framework guiding political and social behavior. Keeping this dual vision alive is essential to a conscious, ongoing fight against tyranny.
We need a collective culture of learning—where everyone is responsible for upholding human rights and recognizing that human dignity and progress depend on it. In the end, all ideas must center around one core value: Humanity itself.
